floral beauties...

from one of my lovely sponsors, Ruche: floral field of ruffles dress ($46.99) and marlee tea party jazz sneakers ($54.99).

interior inspiration : black and white.

Easily one of the best color combinations in fashion, design, and interior decorating. It rarely fails to look stylish and just plain cool. I am too much of a color lover to go fully black & white in my home, but it is by far one of my favorite looks.

Pittsburgh Artist Maria Mangano's South Side Slope Shrines

kapliczka pl. kapliczek : wayside shrine

etymology: Polish, diminutive of kaplica (chapel)

kapliczek (shrines) is an exploration of forgotten past in forgotten spaces.

The shrines are memorials paying silent and decaying tribute to a history I never witnessed, pieced together from books, photos, and anecdotes. It is not only the story of my changed and changing neighborhood, with its new faces, abandoned churches, and crumbling walls, but also the story of my Polish ancestors, whose history and identity are becoming lost with the passage of time and memory.

Through this piece, I search for my neighborhood's past and the influence it has on my identity as a transplant to Pittsburgh and a descendant of Polish immigrants. My hope is that others will visit the kapliczek and respond to the space, influenced by their own histories remembered and forgotten.

How great is this bunny rocker by Playsam? I love traditional rocking horses, but I think I might love this even more. Those Swedes sure know how to create a good design. ($220)

ten images of inspiration : a love of stripes.

I apologize for the quiet day on here. I am feeling a little under the weather and ended up spending a large portion of my day curled up under the covers in bed (which, I have to say, was marvelous.) But here are some lovely images containing many, many stripes to end your Tuesday.

Somewhere between what you need and what you know

Things I love this spring:
  • Wearing my denim jacket, obviously.
  • Making iced coffees at home.
  • My luck, generally speaking. ^^ (Well, except the second point of the I hate list...)
  • My mornings and evenings and mostly everything inbetween as well.
  • Dreaming to Yann Tiersen's music and looking forward to his concert next week in Zurich.
  • The fact that I wouldn't know anything else to add to the list below.

Things I hate this spring:
  • Wednesdays classes. They're such a drag.
  • The volcano erruption in Iceland. Thanks for ruining my trip to Stockholm, Eyjafjallajökull!

The exhibition will feature new works by Danny Bracken, Dee Briggs, Matthew Conboy & Heather Pinson, Ryder Henry, Mary Mazziotti, Connie Merriman, Ben Schachter, Paul Schifino, Tugboat Printshop: Paul Roden & Valerie Lueth, Robert Villamagna and Larkin Werner

Artist in Residence: David Beattie

“David Beattie’s sculptural works combine the use of sound, movement and physics to create unlikely alliances. His reapplication of domestic objects and technologies offer a fresh reading of their use and function and allow a reinterpretation of the specific identity and history of these redundant objects.” (Exhibition text from Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art)

David Beattie was born in N. Ireland in 1979. He earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Dublin’s National College of Art and Design, and his M.A. in Visual Art Practices from Dun Loaghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, also in Dublin.

He has received a number of awards including an Arts Council Artists Bursary in 2009 and a grant from the Harpo Foundation whose mission is to support artists who are under-recognized by the field.

Beattie is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art in Toronto, Canada. Other solo shows include Butler Gallery (Kilkenny, 2009); Oonagh Young Gallery (Dublin, 2009); Mermaid Arts Centre (Bray, Co. Wicklow, 2008) and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (Dublin, 2006).
