a victorian-style brooch...

...from Design is Mine sponsor Julianna Swaney of Oh My Cavalier. The brooch features one of Julianna's own drawings and hangs from a pretty French-made velvet bow, all packaged up in a box with a black ribbon. Isn't it just beautiful? ($25)

ten images of inspiration : the golden age of advertising.

Ever since I can remember, I have been infatuated with advertising from the fifties and sixties. I love the illustrations, photography, type, cheekiness, and all-over design (and yes, even the gender stereotypes that seem so prevalent of the era.) And now with finally watching every season of Mad Men, my obsession has been in full-effect. You can't argue- it was a darn good time for advertising.

SHELTER, Pittsburgh Society of Artists, Downtown Pgh Pa

Pittsburgh Society of Artists presents:

SHELTER

Opening Reception: Friday, October 1, 7:00 to 9:00 pm

...During a time in which society feels threatened by economic, social and global uncertainties, shelter or the simplistic desire for refuge becomes a universal pursuit.

October 1 through November 28, 2010
Hours: T station hours open daily through midnight

Society for Contemporary Craft – satellite gallery One Mellon Center Gallery, 500 Grant Street in the lobby of the Steel Plaza T-Station at One Mellon Center downtown Pittsburgh. Enter the main T station from Grant Street next to One Mellon Bank (where Oliver St meets Grant St)

Artists were required to use green or re-purposed materials as a portion of their mediums as they interpret “shelter” through cutting edge contemporary craft. Works must be made primarily of craft media. This includes clay, fiber, metals, glass and found objects.

Juror Kati Fishbein, the exhibitions coordinator at the Society of Contemporary Craft since 2008 will award three jurors awards. Sponsored by the Pittsburgh Society of Artists (PSA). The chance to exhibit was open to both PSA members and non-members residing in Pittsburgh and surrounding region.

In an effort to aid those less fortunate, PSA will be donating their portion of proceeds to House of Bread in Wilkinsburg

Buckles&Belts: Your style. Your belt.

Walking around like everybody else? For most of us, this doesn’t sound too appealing, that’s why we like to add a different touch to our appearances or seek unique accessories that can be customized if needed. Buckles&Belts, a fairly young Swiss company , specialises in the most popular accessory: the belt. A range of 80 different belts in high quality materials such as calf or python leather and 170 buckles allow 5000 different combinations! Needles to say that with 4 collections a year their variety never disappoints.

At Buckles&Belts everybody can create their customized belt which is measured and prepared at the store right in front of the customer. They developped a simple yet innovative button system which allows the customer to exchange the buckle easily for another. Isn’t it a great idea to personalise your belts to make a unique fashion statement or to match them for a special occasion?

The belt section: different colors, leathers and widths don't make the decision easy but the staff is very helpful.

The buckle section: silver or gold metal buckles from bold to minimal.

Recently they also began to make leather key pendants.

Our own customized belts.

Kitschy Cool Pittsburgh (interesting places and personalities), Ed Piskor of Wizzywig Comics

I came across a blog post from Ed Piskor recently and thought it worth spreading the word about. He links to artist Annie Vicar who creates dolls that caught my eye (one of her artworks is imaged above).

It's a great list of Pittsburgh standouts ( I would think he should be added to that list!).
