Rock, Paper, Scissors

opening April 2

one art exhibition

three unique galleries

three distinct neighborhoods

April 2 through May 23, 2010

Rock, Paper, Scissors is an art exhibition linking three unique galleries located in three distinct Pittsburgh neighborhoods and featuring local, national, and international artists.

Each venue will focus on one of the three titular materials—Rock at SPACE in the Cultural District, encompassing work ranging from video to installation art; Paper at Artists Image Resource (AIR) on the historic North Side, presenting intricate paper cut-outs, sculpture, and more; and Scissors at cutting-edge Fe Arts Gallery in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh’s newest arts scene, featuring all things sharp and some shiny, including electric and kinetic elements.

The exhibition title reflects the playful competition of the children’s game that inspired it. As competitors, the three galleries take turns winning. The triangle of galleries, like the triangle of rivers, represents a spirit of cooperation among the collaborating participants and a linking of diverse neighborhoods that characterize the city.

Artist Alexi Morissey on the Pittsburgh Art Conundrum

I wanted to point out what Alexi Morrisey had to say about the notion of Pittsburgh not acting from within when it comes to the talent which exists here. This quote is from a Pop City Q and A found here.

Pittsburgh constantly denies the reality of its own qualities because, no matter the meetings of world leaders or number of rings on our collective steel-curtain fingers, we seem not to be asked to the dance. That inward anger must be declared as unacceptable; our civic pride must be manifested as a radical localized chest-thump. The city's sense of its self must be determined by itself and for itself, such that success within the city's own culture becomes a measure beyond that of success in the eyes of "foreign" thinkers. Provincial? Yes. But until our self-satisfaction reaches a pressure level equal to or greater than that of the outer, uncaring world, and thus secession a possibility for self-determination, provincialism is a weapon, not a weakness.

Alexi's upcoming exhibit will be at the New Hazlett Theater with a work that has been developed there called "Take A Letter". It premiers May 27-29 and goes on the road from there.

Yeah, it's finally weekend! I'm so happy that I can sleep in tomorrow..byebye dark circle!
Have a fun weekend everyone!

plenty of sleep when we're dead: artists Mike Egan, Josh Iddings, Ron Copeland and Christian Breitkreutz

5PM-10PM FAST>>FWD GALLERY 3700 PENN AVE.

April 2, 2010

5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

PLENTY OF SLEEP WHEN WE’RE DEAD is a four-person exhibition featuring the latest work of Mike Egan, Josh Iddings, Ron Copeland and Christian Breitkreutz. See how all four artists explore the concept of life, death and the small time we have in between to achieve the goals and desires that each one of us has. Prepare to see a wide range of styles from obsessively pieced together screen-printed collage work to stylized narratives to brilliantly executed “funeral portraits” and see how these artists collectively convey the thoughts you are too frightened to have. fastfwdart@gmail.com

Pittsburgh Goes Google High Speed Internet Fiber Network

One more day to register your support!

No city in America could be a better place to investigate the potential of ultrafast Internet connections than Pittsburgh. Google Inc. need look no further as it tries to find the right community where it would deliver Internet services directly to homes at speeds of one gigabit per second. Pittsburgh has innovators who have pioneered computer networks and Internet applications, it has a government poised to support rapid deployment of infrastructure and it has Pittsburghers with a diverse set of needs, opinions and interests.

The City of Pittsburgh, working with local universities and other organizations, is preparing a proposal to convince Google to select Pittsburgh for this exciting new experiment. But Pittsburgh won't be selected if Google doesn't hear from you, the potential users of this new ultrafast network.

Here's how you can help. This site and Google's formal response site provide ways for individuals and organizations to express their ideas and their support for this project. Please check the sections below to learn more about how you can help. And please do so now. Google wants your response by March 26. Pittsburgh needs your response!

What does this mean to Pittsburgh? Learn more about the Google project.

Past, present, future

This picture from the Raoul Spring 2010 campaign brought back memories of the internship I did last summer in Istanbul. The weather is really nice this afternoon so I'm going to a café to finally read the first issue of Vogue Türkiye that my dear blogger friend Yasemin sent me. I wish the weather was already warm enough to wear the outfit below but with tights it might work just as well.

I'm off enjoying some me-time and dreaming about my next internship...

Have a good start to the weekend everyone!

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.

pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Support The Open Thread Regional Review

The Open Thread Regional Review is publishing your peers' best art and writing. Don't believe us? Just visit the online preview of our inaugural edition. If it's by an emerging artist or writer from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia, we're interested. If it's great work, we're publishing it.

Now, we're gearing up to release our second volume: bigger, better, and with your help, more affordable. Isn't the cover gorgeous? The image comes from the work of the book's Featured Artist, Elin Lennox of Pittsburgh, with design by our Featured Designer, Seth Clark of Pittsburgh.

If you'd like to see this kind of work continue to be published and circulated, you can make it happen right now. Just buy one $10 tile, and you can fund the printing costs for one of our first 50 pages! That artist or writer will know exactly who to thank - you! - for their page in the anthology. Best of all, your name will appear in the book to thank you for your role. (Please be sure we have your email address to confirm how you will be credited.)

Open Thread is an arts service organization that establishes and develops frameworks for artistic discovery in Pittsburgh and the surrounding tri-state area, with an emphasis on the emerging artists, writers, and performers who live and work here. To learn more about how our programs and publications might serve you, visit www.openthread.org today!

The publication and distribution of the Open Thread Regional Review, Vol. 2, is supported in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund.
