Clyde Hare: A Memorial Exhibition at Concept Art Gallery Pittsburgh PA

Clyde Hare: A Memorial Exhibition

Please join us NEXT SATURDAY, June 12th, for the opening of our Clyde Hare Memorial Exhibition. The afternoon begins at 4pm with a lecture about Hare's work by Linda Benedict-Jones, Curator of Photography, Carnegie Museum of Art. A reception will follow from 5-7pm.

Clyde Hare is best known for his work on the Pittsburgh Photographic Library (
PPL) project. Hare worked with Russell Lee and Esther Bubley, among others, on the project, which documented the "Renaissance of Pittsburgh”--the transformation from a smoky steel producing city to a clean, 20th century metropolis.

The exhibition includes photographs from his PPL project work, assignments for national magazines such as Life, Fortune, and National Geographic, as well as photographs that were included in his 1958 solo exhibition at the Carnegie Institute. Additionally the exhibition features many rare vintage prints not exhibited previously.

Don't know where to start? Pick any gallery or venue from the list below and pick up a program which has a map. But really all you have to do is just walk down Penn Ave in Garfield and see all the people coming in and out of venues. Each venue has refreshments and snacks and a lot of art to check out and buy. Remember that Unblurred continues to exist because those who are passionate about art buy what strikes them.

artspace105

(Next to the Homestead Grays Bridge)

On street parking available on 7th or 8th Avenues)

Presented by Steel Valley Arts Council, a not for profit arts organization serving the areas of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall.

Seth Graham is a visual artist from Buffalo, New York. He creates works using pen and ink that reflect ideas that bear significance to man’s place in nature, alchemy, death, and time among other subjects. He has developed his artwork and the style in which he produces it around the ideology that we are all part of one whole, and although we branch out and carve a niche for ourselves in life, we eventually succumb to the reclaiming hands of time and nature.

Graham’s works are often described as gritty and scratchy, but bear an elegance that demonstrates a great attention to detail. His drawings pull from a great number of sources, and each piece conveys an idea or bears a symbolic theme. The aesthetics of the pieces help to bring the message to the viewer, and at the same time, make the delivery artistic.

Graham’s mission in creating these works is to induce thought, and to prompt questions. There is a great deal of symbolism and metaphoric use of images in his work that he hopes will prompt the viewer to perhaps question the intent of such a depiction, and ultimately the world around them.

Seth Graham’s visual art will be on view Wednesdays and Saturdays at artspace105 from May 1-15, 2010. An opening reception will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st.

Cluster, a group exhibition of more than 20 Pittsburgh-area artists Pittsburgh Center for the Arts

Frozen and Trapped Forever (detail), Jacob Ciocci, 2010

Opening reception, Friday February 5, 2010

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers announce Cluster, a group exhibition of more than 20 Pittsburgh-area artists, curated by Adam Welch. It is on view February 5 – March 28, 2010. An opening reception will be held on Friday evening, February 5 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. It is open to the public; $5 requested donation; free to PF/PCA members. Beginning with this show, PCA will extend Thursday evening hours to 7:00 pm. The Dialogue Series continues on the second Thursday of each month, and the pavilion series will resume on Thursdays in the summer.

Cluster takes over all PCA's gallery spaces at the Shadyside campus and features invited artists who've investigated the spatial device of connections. These connections might be obvious, esoteric, direct, or juxtaposed, and elicit a fundamental element of artistic discourse. Welch says these artists are, "working within their interests to profess what they know or do not know, for a purpose that is both self and collectively informing."

The show offers a wide range of visual works in a variety of mediums from regional artists. Artworks with dissimilar processes and formations will be displayed around the building creating multiple levels of viewing experiences. Some of these are:

  • A large-scale mixed-media installation by Jacob Ciocci titled, "Frozen and Trapped Forever." This piece employs HD video with painting, combining outtakes of TV/film, comics and self-drawn animations, rapidly cut and collaged together to create an overload of information.
  • A site-specific installation by Jason Lee, which further extends his "Euthenic Set Series," made up of elements of safety-orange painted light boxes containing photographic imagery, wires, plastic ducks and picket fences arranged to present contemporary landscape as sanitized, congenially pristine and compartmentalized.
  • Individual video works by Robert Lasdislas Derr and Julie Perini, both of which investigate the relationship of history and social constructs through filmed performance acts.
  • Interactive installations by Sean Derry and Amanda Long. Derry's piece, "Rehearsing Spring," combines monochromatic panels and heating elements, which hold a temperature close to natural body heat. Long’s work involves color and pattern with multi-channel projectors. When the viewer interacts with it, it takes on different special arrangements of color fields.
  • Sculptural works by Dee Briggs, Will Giannotti, Kyle Houser and Anita Sulimanovic, all of which navigate the object as a process of expression.
  • Painted/printed/drawn/cut works by Connie Cantor, Brian Brown, Bovey Lee David Montano, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens.
  • A series of black and white photographs by Jacob Koestler, and digital color photographs by Michael Sherwin.

Thursday, MARCH 11: The Dialogue Series with PF/PCA curator Adam Welch, and Cluster artists: Dee Briggs, Connie Cantor, David Pohl, and Jacob Ciocci. Free and open to the public. Cash bar opens at 5:00pm; discussion begins at 6:00pm.

Art Exhibit: Finding Meaning in Braddock’s Unsmoke Systems

Art Exhibit: Finding Meaning in Braddock’s Unsmoke Systems

This collective started as a discussion group at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and investigates various approaches to translating meaning in visual imagery. Once a week for the better part of 2009, this group of students, recent graduates, and one faculty member met to discuss and analyze the work of various artists including Rembrandt, Hogarth, Leland Bell, Turner, Amy Sillman, Chardin and many others. The focus was the discussion of what contributed to convey content in visual terms. The categories outlined as lynchpins for analysis included iconography, formalism, the haptic experience and the viewer’s orientation. The presentation of work at Braddock’s Unsmoke Systems gallery site is the culmination of these discussions now posed in visual terms that include various mediums.

Participants include: Jordan Bush, Andre Costello, Maura Doern Danko, Nate McDonough, Max Pokrzywa, Jaycen Poole, Andrew Scott, Josh Troy, Nick Vincenti

Innovation Lives at PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery

Innovation Lives at PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery

From the polio vaccine and the pull-tab can to the Ferris Wheel and the air brake, Pittsburgh has long been a city of innovative firsts and ingenuous inventions. This week, as the whole world is watching, a new exhibition explores and celebrates the city's 21st-century drive, spirit and creativity via the work of local artists. Aptly called Innovation Lives Here: A New Generation of Pittsburgh, the new exhibition showcases work by 20 artists at the Pittsburgh Technology Council's (PTC) 15 Minutes Gallery, one of the latest cultural venues to emerge within the city's thriving arts scene.

On view through January 21, 2010, the dynamic collection features work from a staggering variety of media, from the traditional to the cutting edge, and reflects the diverse modes, media and practices employed by our region's artists. Visitors to Innovation Lives Here: will have the opportunity to view fabric art alongside robotic installations and oil paintings displayed with gigapan technology. Featured artists in the PTC's special G-20 show include Francis Crisafio, Zheng Yang, Ron Nigro, Alan Byrne, Kaoru Tohara, Rick Byerly, Ruth Hendricks, and Sandy Kessler.

The PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery is open to the public during the G-20 Summit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on weekdays through January 21, 2010.

FINAL EXHIBITION @ THE FIREHOUSE
1416 ARCH STREET/
We'd like to take the opportunity to thank our artists, the community and our neighbors at the firehouse studios for supporting our efforts during our stay in the Northside. It is with great enthusiasm and zest that we embark in our new direction, which includes: the development of commercial and residential art acquisition; and exploration of the virtual arena for art process, documentation, interviews and tours… Our long term goal is to provide\ global access to the Pittsburgh arts community following personal and regional developments. In short, providing a window to the world..
Coupling with the virtual development, moxie DaDA will continue to act as facilitators of public art projects. In our next phase, you can expect to see art that moves, engages and challenges.

To stay connected with moxie DaDA, follow the website for changes and current events.
