PITTSBURGH, PA, 3/3/10 – Shaw Galleries is pleased to announce the opening on Friday, April 1, 2011 of "BEAUTY - STRENGTH - REFLECTION: Five Perspectives on the Female Form," an exhibit featuring five women artists from Pittsburgh in a remarkable Spring show of fine art paintings. Each artist has contributed individual works on paper and canvas, as well as a five-piece collaborative piece titled "Dressing Matters" that serves as a focal point of the show.

The opening is Friday, April 1 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

IDLE: A solo exhibition by Colin Noonan, Pittsburgh PA

IDLE: A solo exhibition by Colin Noonan

Opening March 4 Friday 6pm

March 4-April 3, 2011 - 709 Penn Gallery

Idle, Colin Noonan’s solo-exhibit of oil portraits on linen, canvas and plywood are purposefully cropped to depict sitters from the torso up. The still lives are further accentuated with tools and equipment from the German Motor Werks Garage, such as an oil pump, and a parts washer. Noonan works with an earth palette consisting of dark umbers and yellowish ochers for more dimly lit subjects. Many of the subjects in his paintings are lit from a lone light source reminiscent of baroque realism.

Idle refers to the state of the portrait subjects. They are not working or producing, but at a stand-still, detached from the narrative of time. The exhibition title also refers to a car being idle, relating to Noonan’s fascination with cars and the studio where he creates his art – the German Motor Werks Garage. These meticulous paintings are created layer by layer in oil, a slow process rooted in classical painting techniques. “I want to create a tangible presence through these people in their environment,” explains Noonan. “In a sense, they are portraits of the people they depict – not so much a narrative as a state of being, an idleness that sets the subjects apart from their environment. This idleness frees them of doing anything and allows them to think anything.”

About Colin Noonan:
Colin Noonan earned a BFA degree in Painting from Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute and he studied indigenous and contemporary art at Southern Cross University in Australia. Upon returning to the States, Noonan studied still life with instructor Chris Wright. The classical influence would serve as a starting point for much of his still life paintings. A mechanic’s apprenticeship in 2003 put his art career temporarily on hold. Though Noonan’s career as a mechanic was short lived, a car garage in Pittsburgh’s Strip District continues to serves as both his studio and muse.

Sandow Birk's The Word of God at the Warhol, Pgh PA

For five years Sandow Birk has been creating his epic body of work American Qur’an. In this ongoing series, Birk employs traditional Islamic calligraphy and painting techniques to illustrate the entire 114 Suras of the Qur'an. Using ink, gouache and a hand-lettered “font” based on graffiti tagging, he illuminates the verses with relevant scenes from contemporary American life. A selection of these Suras will be on view. This exhibition is the first in an ongoing series titled TheWord of God, which will examine major religious texts through the lens of contemporary art.

The Word of God Exhibitions and Project:

At a time when political parties fight viciously for the higher moral ground, when controversy reigns in the building of mosques, and when bigotry, abortion, and same-sex marriage are wedges of division in our culture there still remains room for interfaith understanding. The Warhol has, in its sixteen year history, presented difficult or controversial imagery and art in order to spark community dialogue. The dialogues and visitor experiences from such encounters with art and images are powerful and potentially community changing.

Chris Ivey:

“I was hired to document the tearing down of the high rises. At the same time I interviewed some of the residents who lived in the high rises and they weren’t happy at all because of the spectacle that was before them. They were really angry. It was their home, it was where they used to live, some for 30 years or more. Even though in many ways it wasn’t the best place to live it was all they had and to see strangers having fun by shooting paintballs at the block left them furious.”

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective CMOA Heinz Galleries, Pittsburgh PA

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective

February 5–May 1, 2011
Heinz Galleries

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective is the first major museum exhibition in the United States to review the career of this groundbreaking American artist. Thek’s best-known work is unique in form and unusual in its concerns, yet he found common ground with other artists of his generation and gave voice to powerful social and philosophical currents in the broader culture of the 1960s and 1970s. His art could be simultaneously intensely spiritual and insistently profane, lyrical and base. At a time when artists were known for their signature styles, he refused that kind of success, producing architecturally scaled collaborative installations as well as small pieces that were quiet, contemplative, and private. In the 1980s, Thek was largely forgotten, but in the last decade and a half, extensive research on his career has been done in Europe. This will be the first major treatment of his work in his own country.

Related programs: Culture Club, February 17; Lecture: Paul Thek, The Artist’s Artist, February 19; “Bound Together” Book Club, March 3; Lecture: Catholicism, the Body, and the Art of Paul Thek, March 31; Religion and the Body: A Visit to the Relics of St. Anthony’s Chapel, April 2.

The exhibition is co-organized by Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director of Carnegie Museum of Art, and Elisabeth Sussman, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Support for Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Dietrich Foundation, and Gail and Tony Ganz. Major support for Carnegie Museum of Art’s presentation is provided by The Henry L. Hillman Fund, the Virginia Kaufman Fund, The Fellows of Carnegie Museum of Art, the Beal Publication Fund, Ann and Marty McGuinn, and Agnes Gund.

Art Out Of The Box Project, Call for Artists, Pittsburgh PA

from Bill Peduto's site:

The Art Out of the Box project sets up artist studios in modified trailer boxes in five neighborhoods (Friendship, Lawrenceville, Polish Hill, South Side, and Central Northside). Pittsburgh City artists chosen to participate in each of these “Art Boxes” will have one week (40 hours) to create an original piece of visual art. The Art Boxes will be open to the public so that residents can see the artistic experience firsthand and interact with the artists. The goal is to demystify the creative process, create conversation about the value and importance of local art and to connect artists with community development groups and community residents. The entire process will be filmed by artist Chris Ivey and the resulting works of art — along with the documentaries — will be shown at a public art exhibit as part of the Downtown Gallery Crawl. The artworks will ultimately be donated to community development centers in the neighborhoods where they were created.

The concept was created by artist Samantha McDonough who has a longtime interest in community-based art initiatives and who will be the project manager. Art Out of the Box has the support of the following groups: The Sprout Fund, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Friendship Development Associates, South Side Local Development Company, Polish Hill Civic Association, Central Northside Neighborhood Council and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Those professional artists — new or established — interested in participating in an Art Box residency can find out more information at the Art Out of the Box website and can download an application here. They’re looking for artists who have “outgoing personalities” and who can engage with the public while working. Applications will be accepted between January 17 and 5 p.m. on February 18, 2011. Chosen artists will receive a fee of $720 and an additional $250 materials stipend.
