Unblurred Art Galleries With Regular Hours, Pittsburgh Pa

Unblurred is great as far as a social happening and for highlighting urban renewal through the arts but it isn't always about the visual artist who is trying to promote people purchasing their work so they can continue making art in Pittsburgh. Artists who display at venues without regular hours or on site sales have a harder road ahead of them for the most part.

For people who are interested in supporting locally based visual artists who aren't able to make every first friday Unblurred on Penn Ave there are just a few sales oriented galleries who have hours:

ModernFormations
4919 Penn Avenue. Pittsburgh PA 15224 412.362.0274
Thursdays 7pm - 9pm
Saturdays 1pm - 4pm or by appointment

Pittsburgh Glass Center
5472 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 | 412-365-2145
Fri., Sat. & Sun. : 10 am – 4 pm
Tues., Wed. & Thurs. : 10 am – 7 pm
Closed Monday
(not always about locally based art sales but overall a great thing for pgh)

*Some of the other venues are by appointment so you can get in touch with them or the artists individually to see. Garfield art gallery list.

If you want to reach beyond Unblurred check out the Pittsburgh Artist Registry and my curated list of Pittsburgh Artists.

Saturday, July 3- Preview Invitational (6-9PM)

Saturday, July 10- Opening Reception (6-9PM)

Saturday July 17- Artist Talk (1-3PM)

Saturday July 31- Closing Party (6-9PM)

Artist Statements:

David Grim-

Inspired by a childhood escape from religious conversion, The Book of Life presents the opportunity for me to reclaim the act of creation from an externalized “other”. Based on the concept of a holy tome containing the names of all those saved from eternal damnation, this project seeks to render humanity in its purest of form- defenseless and open. The intention of the displayed product is to raise questions regarding authority, transience, privacy, and the relationship between the artist and his subject.

Merge Divide-

Convinced that Pittsburgh is the figurative “Crown” of a vast tract of America marked by the Appalachians, I decided to commemorate my travels throughout the region with an online presence, including words and images. This marks my initial foray into the sense of a partially imaginary place that may indeed exist. I mean to convey the weird netherworld quality of this area in sociological and alchemical terms.

Pittsburgh Artist Kathryn Carr at WildCard Lawrenceville Pittsburgh PA

WildCard presents Pittsburgh Artist Kathryn Carr’s Root,

A Scherenschnitte Show, from June 11 to July 15, 2010

Pittsburgh, PA

With the success of Chicago Artist Laura Berger’s “Water Test” show, as well as the wildly popular Vintage Weekend, WildCard in Lawrenceville continues its run of summer events with the Friday, June 11 opening of artist Kathryn Carr’s “Root.” The show revolves around images featuring roots and tying into the fairy tale idea of a “root of all evil.” In addition, new art cards and posters will be created specifically for this show.

Carr’s art was recently presented at Gallery Sim’s “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” where it garnered accolades for her exacting work. But unlike “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” where Carr’s work was presented alongside one other artist, “Root” is a solo show of her paper cuts. Rooted in the traditional German style of Scherenschnitte, Carr is working towards creating a contemporary style that combines the delicate paper cuts with the shadows they create.

WildCard owner Rebecca Morris was pleased to discover a world-class paper-cut artist living right in Pittsburgh and was eager to sell Carr’s work, as well as featuring her as an artist in the store’s back gallery.

“Root” has its opening night on Friday, June 11 with a free reception from 6 to 9pm. No RSVP is required. Samples of Kathryn Carr’s work can be seen on her website at gocarrgo.com

WildCard is located at 4209 Butler St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201.

Charles and Beth Steidle Art Exhibit At ModernFormations Gallery

Opening June 4th 7-10 pm

“Quel Dommage! The Artwork of Siblings Beth and Charles Steidle”

Quel dommage! What a shame! What a pity! This exhibit is inspired by all the little sadnesses and minor disasters accumulated over time: a malfunctioning anatomy, a rabid raccoon, a falling horse, a missing arm, animals eating other animals. As children, Charles rubbed red yarn in Beth’s eye. Beth repeatedly told Charles he was adopted and unwanted. Now, as responsible adults, they have teamed up to present new works, in a variety of media, created throughout the past year.

Artist Dylan Critchfield-Sales at Gallery on 43rd Lawrenceville Pgh PA

Dylan is from Pittsburgh, Pa and is currently working on his MFA out of state. Check the above info for the exhibit.

Opening Friday May 21 7-10pm

Excerpts from Dylan's Exhibit Statement:

Painting to me is about engaging with my surroundings through the act of observation. ‘Painting is a matter of impulse. It is a matter of getting out to nature and having some joy in registering it’ (Hawthorne). It is essentially a way of translating visual sensation through use of shape, color and value. In perceptual painting there is no need for predetermined concepts or formulaic systems. It is always an attempt to convey the truth of one’s visual experience.

...

Working from simplistic subject matter allows me to focus on color and tonal relationships as well as the particular way that forms fit together within the picture plane. I think that painting at its best is about the experience of painting itself and the nature of the artist’s perception. In certain instances I have also worked from fictional sources such as Alfred Hitchcock films in order to introduce a subtle psychological aspect and to achieve somewhat antiquated aesthetic.

The work in this show spans the past two to three years. The earliest work is from my final year of undergraduate at The Maryland Institute College of Art and the latest work was done within the past few months during my first year of graduate school at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Unblurred Schedule here.

If you've never been to the Unblurred Gallery Crawl along Penn Ave in Garfield (Bloomfield and East Liberty as well) you're missing out on a major part of the Pittsburgh art scene. It happens the first Friday of every month (except January) and most venues open up at 7pm.

Don't know where to start? Pick any gallery or venue from the list below and pick up a program which has a map. But really all you have to do is just walk down Penn Ave in Garfield and see all the people coming in and out of venues. Each venue has refreshments and snacks and a lot of art to check out and buy. Remember that Unblurred continues to exist because those who are passionate about art buy what strikes them.

Whatever the month is you can check this link for a schedule:

Exhibit Review: Artists Janese Hexon and Connie Cantor at the Christine Frechard Gallery in Squirrel Hill

Good to see the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and Kurt Shaw covering the talented work of Pittsburgh artists Janese Hexon and Connie Cantor. I also like the sentiment expressed by gallery owner Christine Frechard: "I'm tired of hearing that there's no collectors here, there's no money here. Great artists from here are exhibiting outside of the city and collectors are buying outside of the city."
