Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today

Josh MacPhee (ed.)
Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition which has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times.

$22 ($24.95 cover price)

Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized network of 26 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social, environmental, and political stance. With members working from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers and as a loose collection of creative individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. We believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action. To this end, we produce collective portfolios, contribute graphics to grassroots struggles for justice, work collaboratively both in- and outside the co-op, build large sculptural installations in galleries, and wheatpaste on the streets – all while offering each other daily support as allies and friends.

We’re located at 3410 Penn Avenue in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, at the intersection of Penn and Butler (known locally as Doughboy Square, after the WWI memorial soldier statue across the street). We are in the old Junction Coal building, more recently the offices of the Turner Detective Agency, which has been newly renovated and now houses the workhorse bike/ped nonprofit organization Bike PGH on the first floor, with our offices on the second floor.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.

ABOUT JUSTSEEDS:::

We believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action.

Founded in 1998, and originally the graphics distribution project of Josh MacPhee, Justseeds made the transformation into a worker-owned cooperative in 2007 – the original network being largely in place through past collaborations. Having outgrown our space in a residential basement in Portland, Oregon, in May of 2010 we transported our distribution center to our new and larger home in Pittsburgh, PA. We operate an online store and wholesale distro, an active, multi-voice blog detailing current art and resistance projects around the world, and a small gallery space in our Pittsburgh office which highlights member work.
