ABOUT JUSTSEEDS:::

Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized network of 26 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social and political stance. With members in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly-minded printmakers and as a loose collection of individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. We believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action.

Founded in 1998, and originally the graphics distribution project of Josh MacPhee, Justseeds made the transformation into a worker-owned cooperative in 2007 – the original network being largely in place through past collaborations. Having outgrown our space in a residential basement in Portland, Oregon, in May of 2010 we transported our distribution center to our new and larger home in Pittsburgh, PA. We operate an online store and wholesale distro, an active, multi-voice blog detailing current art and resistance projects around the world, and a small gallery space in our Pittsburgh office which highlights member work.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

New York Artist turns to Pittsburgh in time of Recession

Emerging New York Artist Isabelle Garbani has turned to Pittsburgh during the recession. While the rest of the country is struggling, post-industrial Pittsburgh is faring better: with lower unemployment, stable housing prices and a diversified industry, making it possible for artists to find an audience willing to collect art.

"Unemployment is 5.5 percent, far below the national average. While housing prices sank nearly everywhere in the last year, they rose here. Wages are also up. Foreclosures are comparatively uncommon," according to a January 7, 2009 New York Times article,.

"New York City has been hit really hard by the crisis, and a lot of collectors are hesitating right now. As an emerging Artist, I must go where the economy can sustain art and culture" says Ms. Garbani, who has started showing at BoxHeart Gallery in Pittsburgh, and is preparing for a solo show there in 2011.

Isabelle Garbani is a Brooklyn based artist who received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2004. She has exhibited her work throughout the New York metropolitan area and the Northeast. Her work focuses on contemporary issues and culture and can be seen at www.IsabelleGarbani.com
