David Edwards' Power Flower and Curious Creatures Continue To Engage

Artist David Edwards and his Art Energy Design Team continue to engage people of all ages in regards to the future of alternative energies via creative design and interaction. Most recently they were interacting with over 3,200 students at the Carnegie Science Center for Sci-Tech Days.

Power Flower information.

Curious Creature Photos.

The Power Flower is a 12' wind driven kinetic sculpture and is the first in an evolving series of energy producing public art designs.

The Power Flower collects sun and wind energy with a wind turbine, driven by spinning flower petals, and photo voltaic solar film leaf surfaces.

A rainwater collector serves as base and ballast. The sculpture can provide DC power for laptops, phones or even water pump features for garden applications.

The sculpture also powers LED lighting for night time illumination. A weather-proof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting.

The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.

Our sculptures are created for use by city art festivals, botanical associations, schools and museums for either temporary or permanent site specific installations.

In addition Art Energy Design offers various educational workshops specifically designed for elementary, middle and high school students.

The Power Flower is the first of it's kind and was born on March 15, 2008.

Pittsburgh Citiparks and the Power Flower Team Up

In addition to receiving a Sprout Fund Seed Award in 2009, Art Energy Design is pleased to have Pittsburgh Citiparks onboard as a additional sponsor to the Power Flower Tour. With Sprout Fund and Citipark's help AED's Pittsburgh Power Flower will expand the reach of education workshops and sculpture exhibitions throughout the Spring and Summer of 2010. Activities are planned for 8 city park locations. Public demonstrations of the solar, wind and green features of the working sculpture will be given.

We will also have something fun for the kids. The park exhibitions will unleash "Bug Fest". Sculptural metallic insects will perform feats of strength, demonstrate mechanical motion and inspire creative reuse design. Some insects even feature LED lights and spotlight the actions of the other bugs. The bugs interact with the flower sculpture which serves as their home base and recharging area. They can ride up a "bug elevator" and spin back down to the ground with the help of a helically shaped snake named Screwy. There are spiders, ants crickets and even a mouse. Each has a function that inspires creative thinking.

Dave Edwards, founder of Art Energy Design adds, " This is all about fun. Each bug activity demonstrates a basic mechanical or electrical function. The kids really get it. They ask many questions and offer some great ideas. We continuously incorporate ideas offered by the public into new creations. Art is a great way to connect with people at any level of understanding of green technologies. We answer questions from adults about energy storage, control and usage...and have a great time interacting with the kids."

Art Energy Design Contacted By The State Department.

Pittsburgh, PA- David Lee Edwards, founder and designer for Art Energy Design, was contacted by the U.S. Department of State to submit a proposal for 30 smaller Power Flowers to be potential gifts for the G20 Pittsburgh Summit delegates and the team is currently awaiting word from the State Department.

Edwards notes, "The sculpture's functional design represents the transformation of Pittsburgh toward sustainable industries for environmental technology. The choice of our city for G20 speaks to a growing world understanding of our potential."

The Power Flower is a twelve-foot wind driven kinetic sculpture in the form of a potted sunflower. Sun and wind energy are collected with a wind turbine driven by spinning flower petals and photovoltaic solar film leaf surfaces. The flower provides power for public use. The sculpture also powers colored LED lighting for dynamic night illumination. A weatherproof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting. This is housed within ample signage for graphics and mission statements. The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.

David Edwards, founder of Art Energy Design explains, "The attention grabbing nature of large kinetic artworks is a great way to open a conversation about energy generation within the urban landscape."

Art Energy Design creates public sculpture and designs with sustainable technology application tools. The team is currently taking orders for custom sculptures for schools, businesses and institutions at large.

Art Energy Design also recently received support in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund. The Sprout Fund’s 7th annual Hothouse summer benefit features The Power Flower on Saturday, August 29th, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Walnut Capital’s new Bakery Square development on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East End. The Power Flower will also be featured at a Fair in the Park, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009.

A Fair in the Park, an annual contemporary craft festival presented by The Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh will feature The Power Flower, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009. The Power Flower appears at the festival courtesy of the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors. 20,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which is in its 40th year. Art in Public: Expressing Youth Voices in Pittsburgh Contest

Art in Public: Expressing Youth Voices in Pittsburgh

Art Energy Design's Pittsburgh Power Flowers

from Rick Byerly:

this is something i'm really excited about. several months ago i was fortunate to have been approached by artist david l edwards with an incredible idea to merge public art with sustainable energy. since then i've joined on and will help with marketing, sales and community relations. the goal in general is to raise money to then sell these sculptures to already interested parties like Phipps Conservatory.

the first one he has already built is a 12 foot metal sunflower sculpture with the petals functioning as the wind turbine and the leaves as l.e.d. lighting. it lights up at night and will have the capacity to charge cell phones and the like. in the next few days i will be photographing the working model.

the details on the Pittsburgh Power Flowers are here.

we have an opportunity to receive a $25,000 grant from the grable and pittsburgh foundations to involve pittsburgh youth in the design and use of these power flowers and are excited about the possibilities. after the initial grant we will be donating 2 of the 5 power flowers to pittsburgh organizations which best support youth voices. just today we picked up an important pittsburgh public school connection. one of the things which makes our project stand out is it's financial sustainability. the other 3 flowers we will sell and plow the money back into creating new flowers of different designs and colors to sell to interested parties.i'm asking for your help in registering at the changemakers website and post comments as you see fit about the Pittsburgh Power Flowers project.

the register link is here and the link to our entry is here.

the window for relevant comments is very short as they start considering the applications May 21. the voting begins june 8 and everyone who registers at changemakers will be eligible to vote. i'll send a reminder that day.we will also be debuting the working model at pittsburgh technology councils' art and tech kickoff on june 18, 2009. more details closer to that date.thanks for your time!

The Competition:

The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Grable Foundation are partnering with Ashoka’s Changemakers to build a movement that will use public art to capture the creativity and activism of youth in Pittsburgh. We’re looking for projects that empower youth to demonstrate what’s important to them through well-designed, sustainable public art. The most inspired projects will be publicly recognized and two winners will receive $25,000 grants to fund their projects. We are looking for artists and those who love art to create a new type of innovative public art in the greater Pittsburgh area. Most of the public art in our region does not reflect the experiences of young people and their responses to the issues they care about. If you believe in the power of art to transform public spaces, engage youth, and inspire social change in our community, it’s time to get involved.details about the changemakers competition:

Art in Public: Expressing Youth Voices in Pittsburgh entries will be accepted until May 20, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Standard Time. Individuals and teams are encouraged to submit ideas early so they can receive comments, questions, and insights from the Changemakers and Pittsburgh Foundation communities, which can be used to improve their entries before the final deadline.

Here’s how the Challenge will work:

Entry Stage, April 8 – May 20, 2009: Entries can be submitted until May 20, 2009, 6:00 p.m. US Eastern Standard Time. Entries may be submitted by teams or individuals. Supporters are encouraged to nominate entrants, add comments and participate in the online review discussion with the entrants.

Online Review and Judging, May 21 – June 5, 2009: Online review and discussion continue during this phase. Simultaneously, a panel of experts and community members from the Pittsburgh region will select between 5-10 Finalists. Finalists will be announced on June 5, 2009.

Online Voting, June 8 – June 24, 2009: The Changemakers community votes online to select the 2 grant-winners from the slate of Finalists. Anyone who registers with Changemakers online is eligible to vote and Finalists will be encouraged to mobilize their supporters within the Pittsburgh region. Everyone who enters the challenge will receive increased exposure to the Pittsburgh Foundation, regional grantmakers and others who are interested in public art and youth expression. Participation in the competition offers the opportunity to receive feedback on your idea from fellow entrants, Changemakers and Pittsburgh Foundation staff, judges, and the Changemakers community.
