The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com. the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

i heart pdx.

Hello everyone! Did you have a splendid weekend? I made it out to the huge spring Crafty Wonderland sale, which was extremely inspiring. There were so many familiar faces and brand new amazing artists whom I had never heard of, which reignited my love of this town. I always find it so incredible how many truly talented people live here. So, since I have a lot of new local discoveries and an overflowing bookmark folder of pdx artists, I have decided to make it "Portland Week" on Design is Mine! I will still do all my regular features and post work from other places, but a whole lot of my posts will be based on Portland artists and shops.

Happy Monday everyone!

H&M Fall 2010 Preview

As mentioned before, we went to the H&M Showroom last Thursday. So, here are some impressions of the upcoming H&M fall/winter 2010 collection.

The collection is extremly multifaceted. Every single piece is made of different fabrics, patterns and colors. The collection includes silken blouses as well as heavy knitwear. The colors go from nude tones to saturated colors and the patterns are very geometrical, which gives an ethnic touch to the garments.

Unblurred Schedule here.

If you've never been to the Unblurred Gallery Crawl along Penn Ave in Garfield (Bloomfield and East Liberty as well) you're missing out on a major part of the Pittsburgh art scene. It happens the first Friday of every month (except January) and most venues open up at 7pm.

Don't know where to start? Pick any gallery or venue from the list below and pick up a program which has a map. But really all you have to do is just walk down Penn Ave in Garfield and see all the people coming in and out of venues. Each venue has refreshments and snacks and a lot of art to check out and buy. Remember that Unblurred continues to exist because those who are passionate about art buy what strikes them.

Whatever the month is you can check this link for a schedule:

Pittsburgh Artist John Metzler, Reclaimed Wood Sculptures and Furniture

An amazing artist, covered here as well.

Check out the article on John Metzler below:

Pittsburgh artists turn fallen trees into furniture and other interesting objects
Sunday, May 02, 2010
Most city trees that fall or are felled become mulch or firewood. Mr. Metzler proposes higher use -- furniture and functional art that honors the tree and its hard-knocks urban existence. The environmental payoff is that turning a tree that falls or must come down into furniture saves healthy trees from the demand for furniture.

His pieces and the work of other artists and woodworkers sit and hang in the showroom of the Urban Tree Forge, 1004 Washington Blvd., Lincoln-Lemington.
