Call for Artists: Streetscape Planters for Lawrenceville

DESIGNED STREETSCAPE PLANTERS
FOR LAWRENCEVILLE
BUSINESS DISTRICT
Application Deadline: May 31, 2010

pdf here

from Lawrenceville Corp:

May 4, 2010 - In September of 2008 the Urban Redevelopment Authority hired the Studio for Spatial Practice to develop a community supported vision for the Lower Lawrenceville Business District; the area between Doughboy Square (34nd Street) to 40th Street. During the planning process, two public meetings were held and a steering committee of community stakeholders was formed to help shape the planning process. Based on input received during the first public meeting as well as the steering committee, the LoLa Plan, which was completed by the Studio for Spatial Practice in July of 2009, stated that artist –designed planters at merchant locations should be implemented in the commercial corridor.

The Lawrenceville Corporation (LC) is the lead agency implementing the near‐term improvements as described in the LoLa Plan, including the artist‐designed streetscape planters. Through funding from the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County the Lawrenceville Corporation will work with an artist to place streetscape planters throughout Lawrenceville’s Mainstreets Pittsburgh Districts – Butler Street between 34th – 55th and Penn Avenue between 40th and 45th Streets.

The planter design should be of the highest artistic quality. The planters must be durable enough to withstand placement in the main business corridors and when filled should be heavy enough so that they cannot be removed without substantial effort. Due to limited budget and longevity of the project, the LC would prefer that the artist use concrete as the primary medium for this project.

The artist should be familiar enough with the medium and processes to not only conceptualize the project but be able to oversee the management of the fabrication of the planters as well. The LC can assist in finding volunteers and other support for the artist but will not be responsible for the fabrication of the planters.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com. the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Token Sim

If this has passed you by then you'll defiantly want to stop and take a gander at this sim. Token (Token sim) has a number of excellent outfits for women complete with jewelry, shoes, and POSES. The guys have a choice of two judo suits each with a unique pose, both excellently shaded with prim attachments. And there are also 3 cute mascots- for girls or guys. Simply fly or walk around and touch the cutouts on the pedestals and you'll receive the outfit pictured. You'll want to fly around the whole sim as there are TWO levels of buildings with these cutouts. Not all the outfits available here are pictured.
